Peak temperature elevation

Howden ACHP™ combines Howden’s advanced compression expertise with BL Thermodynamics’, patent pending, absorption technology to create a high temperature heat pump (HTHP) for upgrading low-grade industrial waste heat into high-temperature process heat, steam, hot water up to 200°C or heat for district heating networks.

Unmatched efficiency

The combination of advanced compression and absorption technologies delivers exceptional COP values for respective temperature lifts, reducing energy costs and emissions. Gliding temperatures at the heat source and heat sink due to the absorption/ desorption principle, as opposed to commonly used condensation/ evaporation principle at constant temperature, create unmatched COP values.

High performance

Engineered for demanding industrial conditions. ACHP is a closed-loop heat pump system delivering temperatures up to 200°C and temperature lifts up to 100°C under low pressures; ideal for applications requiring high-grade heat.

  • Package incorporates Howden oil-free screw compressors that are proven in highly demanding processes across the oil and gas sector
  • 24/7 operation
  • Uptime digital performance monitoring for maximum system efficiency and availability

Flexible operation

Using an ammonia-water mixture as the working fluid means the system’s refrigerant concentrations can shift dynamically. This provides the customer with a wide operating range, flexible response to changing process conditions, and optimised thermodynamic performance during operation.

Scalable solution

Delivering between 500kW to 9.4MW of heating capacity based on our standard compressor range.

  • Up to 18 MW of thermal output when using two bare shaft oil-free screw compressors
  • Higher capacities available through deployment of additional compressor sets

Applications

Howden ACHP can eliminate up to 100% of Scope 1 and 2 emissions. As well as enabling companies to meet strict environmental regulations and sustainability targets, reduced CO₂ taxes, and potential government incentives further enhance Howden ACHP as a financially attractive investment.

  • Heavy industry
  • Chemical processing – distillation, drying, synthesis
  • Food & beverage - pasteurization, sterilization, drying
  • Paper, pulp, & wood products - drying, hot water processes
  • District heating - hospitals, large-scale space heating and hot water

Sustainable design

Howden ACHP uses a natural water-ammonia mixture refrigerant and is thereby future proofed against upcoming F-gas regulations and bans.

  • Outstanding heat transfer properties with reduced energy consumption
  • Zero Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP = 0)
  • Zero Global Warming Potential (GWP=0)
  • Long-term regulatory security

Simple robust construction

Due to the use of low pressures in the system, the design is simpler and more cost-effective than high-pressure technologies.

As well as providing the capability of dealing with higher temperatures, oil free operation also means simpler operation and maintenance with no oil management or degradation challenges.

Where possible Howden uses containerized factory assembled units to minimize on site assembly work. Space efficient layout ensures minimal plot area. Ideal for brownfield sites and/or facilities with installation constraints.
